Trip Introduction

Nepal is well known for its diverse geography with the Himalayas and is considered as one of the most desired adventurous destinations in the world. The most preferred and popular trek in the Himalayas is Annapurna Base Camp Trek well known as ABC trek. This is a multiday walkthrough trek to the base of the 10th highest peak of the world ‘Mount Annapurna’ (8091m) with base lying at the altitude of 4130m. It is one of the easy and fascinating trekking routes on the earth.

The route incorporating a spectacular view of Annapurna range, mount Macchapucchre, mount Hiunchuli and mount Dhaulagiri with their diverse terrain, culture and wide varieties of flora and fauna is a treat for any travel lover.

 

Itinerary

There are 2-3 routes to ABC from Pokhara which one can choose according to the traveling days and budget. All the routes meet at Chhumrung and follow the same path to the base camp. The best and relaxing kind of route is an 11 day trip via Nayapul-Tikhedhunga-Ghorepani-Poonhill-Tadhapani-Chhumrung-ABC as it covers popular destinations in Nepal like Ghorepani and Poonhill.

Day 1:  Kathmandu – Pokhara

The road trip to Pokhara is itself a great journey as one can enjoy a mesmerizing scenic view of beautiful landscape, fields and two rivers Trishuli and Marsyangdi along with panoramic view of mountains like Ganesh, Manaslu, Lamjung and most of the Annapurna range.

Day 2: Pokhara- Nayapul- Tikhedhunga

From Pokhara one can rent car/ van to Nayapul and the drive is about 2 hours. The trekking starts from here. It is a few hours walk to Tikhedhunga (2-3 hours) covering the bank of Burundi River.

Day3: Trek to Ghorepani

The trip is bit difficult walk through stone staircases to Ulleri. Then from Banthanti, it is 6-7 hours walk to Ghorepani. The trail is covered with spell bounding rhododendron and oak forests.

 

Day4: Hiking to Poon Hill and Tadhapani

It takes only 45 minutes to walk to the Poon hill viewpoint from Ghorepani. The blissful morning with a view of breathtaking sunrise and mountain range can be enjoyed. After the view, the 2.54km trek to Tadhapani starts which is a walk of 5-6 hours.

Day 5: Trek to Chhumrung

From Tadhapani, the trail descends towards forests for about 45 minutes then it consists of steep downhill through Kimrung Khola. The suspension bridge leads towards Gurjung. The trail then ascends from there for 45 minutes. The straight trail then leads to Chhumrung. The trek is about 5 hours long.

Day 6: Trek to Dovan

This 5 hours trek includes a crossing of Chhumrung Khola and climbing towards Sinuwa. The straight walk through the cool forest leads to Dovan.

Day 7: Trek to Deurali

The 6-7 hours straight walk through forests leads to Deurali.

Day 8: Trek to ABC

The less steep trail through mountains leads to the Macchapucchre base camp. Then the trail turns to the left towards ABC base camp is reached. Finally, the destination is reached where one can enjoy 360 degrees of mountainous views. The breathtaking view of Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna South (7219m) and Macchapucchre (6997m) is experienced.

Day 9: Trek down to Dovan

The same route is followed backward to Dovan via Deurali.

Day 10: Trek to Jhinu

From Dovan same route is followed backward to Chhumrung then the steep downward path leads to Jhinu. 20 minutes walk leads to the natural hot spring where one can enjoy a nice hot water bath.

Day 11: Return to Pokhara via Nayapul

From Jhinu it is 4-5 hours walk to Nayapul. Then the car/ van can be rented to Pokhara.

 

Best Time to Travel

One can head for this trek any time of the year except monsoon due to complications from rainfall.

Autumn (September- November) is the best season for ABC. The dry climate and moderate temperature make the trek more fruitful as landscapes and views are at their best during this season.

Spring (March-May) is another best season for ABC trek as one can enjoy blooming of rhododendrons and clear visibility but there is a chance of avalanche though. Trekkers must be careful.

Winter (December- February) trek is also possible but harsh due to extreme cold weather and snow. Winter trek is for those who want a less crowded hike.

 

Food and Accommodation

There are enough guest houses and lodges in the area so there will be no problem to foods and lodging at a reasonable price. You can find basic yet comfortable rooms which are shared basically. Traditional Nepali cuisine is must have when you are in the ABC area. Tibetan, Chinese, Indian, Italian and more authentic foods are found in abundance. It is advisable to pre-order your food because it takes longer for food preparation in colder areas.

 

Difficulties

If you are a non- walker then the idea of this trip is not advisable as one must be able to walk 5-7 hours a day for the achievement of the trek. One must be in good physical health and the strong determination is a must for this trek. There are no hospitals in the area so people with major health problems like heart and lung diseases are not advised. The most common problem faced by the trekkers is the altitude sickness so consulting your physician before the trip is highly recommended. The roads are steep and rocky so there is a high possibility of bruises in the foot so consider buying some good walking boots and walking stick.  The climate up there is not favorable for many so make sure that you have carried enough thermal clothes and sleeping bag along with energy bars.

 

Important Tips to Know

The trek is not an easy task; so make sure you have done enough planning and adapted every precaution before heading out. There is no mobile network in the higher areas so gear up to forget your social life. Make sure you have enough extra money so as to get local souvenirs to your close one.
